Hello radio listeners!

Well, this show has been an ongoing experiment with the music that I am exposed to during a given week, and this week the biggest event musically had to be the concert put on by Bob Dylan at the Sudbury Arena. Our dear friend Angelo has conveniently provided the setlist if you are interested, and naturally the show this week reflects a good chunk of the music still rambling through my head like a drunken preacher. Bob took some criticism in the local papers for the concert, but frankly, I felt the majority of the complaints were largely unmerited.

Why people should complain about not recognizing the songs when the only Dylan they've listened to since 1970 was Blood on the Tracks or songs about Alicia Keys and Wonder Boys. It is also ironic to me to hear people complain about not being able to understand the lyrics or his singing...isn't that what you paid to go see? This is Bob Dylan you paid for! Perhaps they expected that at the end of his career, Dylan would suddenly become Pavarotti or some crystal clear annunciating machine with the diction of a Shakespearean actor. I, on the other hand, paid to see a legendary rebel play music (any music), and I wasn't disappointed. He played keyboards, he played harmonica, and best of all, he played guitar! He played classics and he played new stuff, he mumbled and he scowled, he shuffled and he paced. He cut songs off, and he directed his outstanding band with crabby gusto. That is the stage show that is the legend of Bob Dylan. Who would want anything more?

My opinion is that if you want to see the young Bob Dylan, invent a time machine or retreat to your memories. I was just thankful to have had the opportunity to see in the flesh a man whose name will live a lot longer than any of ours will. The concert for me was summed up perfectly by the people sitting in front of me. A middle-aged couple was seated in front of us with their two young children. At first I was worried the kids would spend the whole concert complaining or being otherwise childishly distracting. To my heartwarmed joy, not only did the children not act bored, they danced and clapped and loved it right along with their parents. Every once in a while I would catch the husband and wife hold each others' gaze, their eyes communicating as loudly as Dylan's crooning. Here was an unknown and unspoken shared past being kindled in front of me through the music they so clearly loved and wanted to share with their children. When Bob Dylan came to Sudbury, it was a chance for them to recapture part of the past, and a chance for their children to pick up the mantle and carry with them, into the future, the music of a man who has left an idelible mark on his artform.

Hello radio listeners!

This week we're happy and extremely proud to announce that we have taken over the dormant Artistry in Jazz program on CKLU. The show (I believe!) is the longest running show on the station, and has been as big a part of Sudbury's auditory landscape as the smokestack is of the physical one. Adding to that already enormous pedigree, the show was hosted for over twenty years by the legendary Sigfried Bjorn. We will talk about 'Siggy' more at a later date, but for now all those interested in hearing more jazz can now tune in at 8pm for what we hope will continue to be some of the best jazz in Sudbury.

Hello radio listeners!

Sad news this week! Our beloved co-host, Marcus "the iPod" Aurelius, has died. Our small stoic friend was the major guiding force in changing this show from a completely random and inconsistent show to the critical wonder - and indie darling - that it still is not today. So we pay homage to that little square of electronics who had more heart than half the population of Sudbury. Always good for a sad song when wallowing, or a lively danceable when in the mood for some hot-stepping, Marcus was a true original on CKLU. We thank him for his year of constant service, and all hope that when he is replaced, it is by a commodity that is no Commodus.

Hello radio listeners!

My apologies music fans, but I missed the show this week while I attended a semi-annual meeting of the Ontario contingent of the Canadian Federation of Students . Your intrepid host even had the opportunity of grilling Premiere Dalton McGuinty's new Climate Change Secretariat about his mandate and about the Liberal push for Nuclear Energy as a "green" (read, "radioactive green") alternative to coal plants.

The gov set up a new website, http://additupontario.ca/ . Which is curiously focused entirely on what people can do to prevent climate change. The website is very poorly laid out, and the web designer seems to have gone off on a mastabatory display of his scripting prowess, which really only serves to bog the site down. The worst part, one supposes, is that in truth the information isn't particularly useful or easy to find when it is. If you want to see what the government is doing (aside from placing the responsibility on citizens instead of industry) then you can check out the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's website at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/en/. It is appropriatelty vague and non-commital.

If you'd like to send your thoughts or concerns to the new Secretariat, well you actually can't as there is currently no public listing for the man who is supposed to save our province. So, go fuck yourself Liberal Party of Ontario.

Hello Radio Listeners!

We're back!
My two-week contract is finished, I got a good chunk of my tuition paid for, and we've got three weeks of music sitting in the This Week In Braille pool, ready to get passed on to your eardrums!

This week I am testing out a CD mix I'm making for someone. I originally was going to simply make a Sonics mix, but that blew up into 4+ hours of music, so I thought I'd try it out on you. The idea that I am going for is summery music; by which I don't necessarily mean music about summer, but music that breathes well. Summer to me is about open windows, whether in cars, at home, or out and about, there's something magical about the way the air moves in the summer, especially at night. So this is my first stab at a mix of music entirely meant to be breathable. So let me know what you think, if I'm going to make a four CD mix tape for someone, I want to know its going to be listened to!

This Week's Featured Album: ( The Alan Lomax Collection ) Southern Journey Volume 08: Velvet Voices

The Sonics are the original Seattle garage band. They emerged on the scene with their driving guitars and screaming lyrics in 1965 with their stellar debut Here are the Sonics! It's fun, lyrically and musically, and its great when you need a break from the music it inspired. As for Alan Lomax, every day I wake up I am thankful for the work this man did. As a field agent for the American Library of Congress, he and his father travelled around the U.S. with portable recording units going into communities, work fields, even prisons, in order to record American folk music from its sources. He later travelled around the world recording traditional folk music in England, Spain, Italy, The Carribean, even as far away as Yugoslavia and Romania! He preserved a musical legacy that the world is quickly forgetting, and he left important marks both on musicology and the history of human music. Southern Journey Volume 08: Velvet Voices is a devastatingly incredible collection of traditional songs from America's Eastern shores recorded live by Lomax. I lack the words to describe how incredible and moving this album is. Go buy it now, and see the power of music in the hands of everyday people!

My humble apologies for the delay in posting these, and for my absence these last two weeks, but Post-Secondary education doesn't get paid for in charm, so I had to take a two-week contract to make some moolah.

Featured Album: Weapons of Jazz Destruction by Nostalgia 77 Octet

Okkervil River I just heard about last month, and I'm really starting to get into the band. Their 2007 album the Stage Names got great reviews, and made many best of '07 lists, and with good reason. Nostalgia 77 Octet is the live version of Nostalgia 77 (aka Ben Lamdin), one of the most innovative jazz artists performing today. Nostalgia 77 Octet is, in my opinion, the best jazz being made right now, and if you like complex pieces, with swinging rhythyms, and an all-star lineup of musicians, than this is the band for you!

Hello radio listeners!

Okay, well we introduced two new features to the show this week, the Featured Artist and Featured Album. We'd like to expand it out into a great weekly feature, and maybe do with the featured artist what we did with Bowie on the vinyl show - sort of have them as a running theme through the show. That still needs to be decided on, though, but we were thinking it would be a good way to promote and introduce new artists to you. We'll see how it works in the coming weeks. Adele is a great singer out of England. Think Amy Winehouse without the bullshit. She & Him is a collaboration between actress Zooey Deschanel (Will Farrell's co-worker from Elf) and musician M. Ward. It's a fantastic album, and one of our early favourites for 2008. We highly recommend both of these great new artists and we'll definitely be playing more of them in the weeks and months to come!

Hello Radio listeners!

Okay, so the theme for this week's show was vinyl: that wonderful, circular, spectacular-sounding mainstay of the home music scene. From an accidental discovery by Thomas Edison in 1877, through Emile Berliner's gramophone and the Victrola ("the Steinways of sound," an unusual statement considering that Steinways are in fact the Steinways of sound), through those swingin' sixties, to its fading after the emergence of the CD format, to the remergence thanks to dj's and the rise of mp3's.

It's so wonderful to see so many current artists releasing their works on vinyl, and I really recommend that you consider switching formats if you are a CD buyer. The RIAA cries itself to sleep every night with these laments of lost revenues due to donwloading and declining CD sales, while they make nary a sound about the rise of vinyl sales. Shhh. Don't say anything though, because then they would have to put their attention on their own inadequate payments to artists instead distracting from that fact by villifying downloaders and accusing the real fans of music of ripping off the artists.

Woah, that was a rant. Sorry about that. Why don't we get back to where we're supposed to be...

So anyway, with a vinyl sellers show this Sunday in Sudbury, and my head all a-flutter from some recent vinyl purchases, I decided that I needed to do another all-vinyl show. I got a couple of requests from The Cul-de-Sac crew, but the majority of these are my own LP's. I hope the mic shows you what kind of musical variety is available to you in the wonderful world of records!

Hello radio listeners!

Thanks for tuning into CKLU 96.7FM and for taking an interest in our little program! It's hard to be able to get a flow for a radio show while still being able to inform you about all the great music you're hearing, so to make things a little easier, and to promote the discovery of new music, every week we'll be placing our "set lists" up here so that you can find that song that caught your ear!
